Dick DeVos Has Dedicated His Life To Improving Grand Rapids And The State Of Michigan

Dick DeVos has always supported the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan and has been working for its success for many years. He ran to serve the state of Michigan as its governor as a Republican candidate but lost to the incumbent. This never slowed him down because he has continued to work for the success of the state and every city in it. Part of his support comes in the way of hard work and dedication to see laws passed in the state that benefit the people living there. It was him was responsible for passing the law to make Michigan, the home of the union, a state that does not force workers to be a part of a union in order to gain employment. He also donates large sums of his own money to organizations, projects, and groups that work to further the growth of Michigan.

In the past, Dick DeVos has been on the side of Grand Rapids and its citizens even when they weren’t aware of his help and guidance. In 1991, there was a plan being introduced publicly to construct a sports and convention arena in the city. While this looked good to many on the surface, they didn’t have the knowledge and experience that Dick DeVos had. The arena was going to be built just north of downtown Grand Rapids, and he knew that this was a mistake because the city of Detroit had made the same mistake many years before. Detroit had built the Pontiac Silverdome and Palace of Auburn Hills and watched as the Detroit Lions and Pistons left the city after it was completed. This, obviously, reduced the amount of income that the arena could take in and means that the arena’s construction had been a waste of money.

Dick DeVos began to lobby against the arena being built in Grand Rapids and made plenty of phone calls to do so. His lobbying efforts had a positive side effect, and that was the putting together of Grand Action, which is a group comprised of business leaders. Grand Action has been responsible for the construction of the DeVos Performance Hall, Van Andel Arena, Michigan State University’s medical school, and many other buildings that have been vital to the success of the city. Dick DeVos has also been responsible for nonstop flights being ran out of the Gerald R. Ford airport as well as laws that given many Michigan citizens the opportunity to send their children to private schools and charter schools.
